Week 2 Lab 01/29/25
This week in lab I was able to relate my past elementary school knowledge of living things and nonliving things to my more advanced knowledge today. I was able to remember what constituted a living thing as living because it has cells. However, today in class, it is even more clear why a living thing is constituted as it is. It was a great refresh to go over the characteristics of living things and really understand why these are so important. Also, I think that our debate using the argumentation was a great refresh on the three parts of it. I remembered so vividly from school-age but it was good to get a fresh foundation!
Today in lab we made an Anchor Chart of the characteristics of living things. I want to incorporate Anchor Charts for my students for science subjects throughout the year because I think that these show the foundations of what the topic is each unit/theme. I think that with the help of words and pictures - ideas become much more clear and less confusing because there is an association! Anchor charts will be a common tool used in my future classroom. Also, informational videos for students are important as well! I think that delivering content in different ways to cater different learning styles are important, so that was a great reminder of another way.
A new question that I have is - what are the most common ways to incorporate experiments and hands on experiential learning in the classroom? Are these lesson plans usually found on the internet or from textbooks provided by schools?
Hi Madison! I agree that I was able to relate what I already knew about living and nonliving things to a more complex way of thinking about them and on a different level. I also liked the refresh on the CER way of debating. I remember always using that method in science in junior high to the point where it was burned into my brain! It was a nice refresher to go back over it now and reflect and deepen my understanding. I liked your question about if these plans are found from internet or textbooks provided by the schools. I think that is really important to understand if these teachers are having the ability to come up with different things relating to the standards or if it is all already made up for them.

Hi Madison, I never thought of your question before. There are so many common activities in the education world, but I had never considered if they were found online or mostly in the books provided by the schools. Like you, I also want to incorporate anchor charts in the classroom. While they are not only enjoyable for me to create, it is a great visual for students to learn from. Learning from anchor charts was always helpful for me because I am a visual learner. I think this is a great way to provide different modes of delivery of knowledge in the classroom to ensure each student is connecting to their learning.
